Newington Elementary is excited to expand our playground area with the addition of a Phyzics Cresent Moon to honor our former educator Mr. Tommy Henry. This innovative piece of equipment engages students ages 5-12 with a variety of challenging climbing activities and Mr. Henry was a huge advocate of physical fitness.
We have a goal of $25,000 to allow us the resources to install this new resource to our students.
As part of this budget, the PTA has generously gifted $5,000 toward this very special project. This equipment will honor the memory of Mr. Tommy Henry, a beloved educator who profoundly impacted our school community. Mr. Henry was a teacher, coach, and mentor at Newington and in Dorchester District 2 for several years but lost his battle to cancer in December of 2019. When Covid shut the world down, our plans to have a dedication to him were put on pause. Mr. Henry was a passionate advocate for physical fitness and believed wholeheartedly in the value of play as an essential part of children’s learning and development. This new equipment will serve as a lasting tribute to Mr. Henry and his legacy of inspiring students to grow not only academically but also physically and emotionally. It will be a space where children can learn, explore, and connect—just as Mr. Henry envisioned.

This versatile climber provides a unique layout that inspires kids to build their strength, coordination, and critical thinking skills. The main arch is comprised of flextread panels and rotomolded plastic foot/handholds. Climbing nets extend from either side, leading to a steel ladder with asymmetrical rungs on one side, and a Bumper Ladder on the other. The center of the arch is open, offering a vertical climbing path for kids via steel and rope. Below the arch, rope and a flextread panel provide balancing and proprioceptive opportunities as well as social.
